When you are talking a publicly traded company words hurt.

That’s only true until money can be made from the injury. Then they cause full body cast worthy injuries.

I feel that TSLA has benefited more from media hype than it has been hurt. Not only that, but Elon manipulates it himself with tweets of all things. In my opinion if he truly cared about the stock price staying stable he’d get off twitter.

I feel like this should be a thing but it’s not executable. It certainly can’t be  run by Musk (and quite frankly I can’t offer up a name for who should run it).

If somehow run with complete impartiality it could actually benefit your country [see paragraph below]. I don’t think that’s possible, especially ‘in house’. Issue being that if it takes off it’s just another influencing platform that creates an actual dictatorial censorship score. I wouldn’t trust user ratings either. I think it’s just too susceptible to corruption...

That said the main US media needs a definite tone down of the talking heads and subsequent partisanship they’ve developed. They’re a constant plague of divisiveness and you simply can’t have a unified country with how they currently ‘report’.

People at the fringes will never accept anyone to be impartial.

24- hour for-profit news has been a cancer on our nation.

What happened was that people realized that while that did serve a purpose to develop a thicker skin, so to speak...

It is ultimately a falacy. Words can and do destroy reputations, careers, livelihoods, families, communities, and even lives... depending on the words.

When a person can get FIRED from their job based on a cell phone video of him cracking the knuckles of his left hand while driving with the side window down, because some other busybody moron claims that it is “white supremacy gestures” with no context, no proof, nothing explicit or implied...

then WORDS, in the form of groundless accusations, and words from gutless, cowering employers who won’t stand behind their employees long enough to find out what happened, or whether the accusation has any grounds... say “you’re fired”... those words hurt.

Those words SHOULD hurt the groundless accuser somehow (baseless accusations run rampant when there is no consequence for bearing false witness) , and the company as a wrongful termination lawsuit.

https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/sdge-worker-fired-over-alleged-racist-gesture-says-he-was-cracking-knuckles/2347414/

Oh, and BTW...

According to the Anti-Defamation League , the gesture — made by forming a circle with the thumb and index finger, and extending and separating the other three fingers — has been used in recent years by white supremacists to form the letters W and P, but has also long been used as a sign signifying “OK” or approval. Therefore it shouldn’t be assumed to be a white supremacy symbol unless there is other evidence to support those claims, according to the ADL .

Also... the image appears that his index finger is extended..

And he happens to be ethnically hispanic.

“words will never hurt me” is a naive fallacy, and not even all that accurate to be teaching children. Although being thin-skinned is no better, either.

Slander and Libel are crimes of defamation because WORDS MATTER.

I agree with much of what you said, and n ot to say that what you presented isn’t valid, but I feel like this is a slightly different convers ation than “Billionaire crybaby is mad because he receives valid criticism ”

What you linked was the result of a Twitter user making an inflammatory post without context. That is obviously a modern social problem that requires addressing, but t he journalistic article you linked presented the facts of that particular situation . Elon wasn’t attacking social media, he was attacking The Media .

Words do matter, I agree, but a temper tantrum over some articles saying “hey, maybe don’t rely on autopilot” or “The Model Y has production issues” is not the same thing as this guy losing his job over some one else’ s social media post.

I think the original purpose of the “stick and stones” was a simplified way to address the childish response to childish taunts, and later  criticism, warranted or not (not lies that get you fired from your job) . This seems to be the lesson Elon never learned, based on his childish response, and the purpose of me using that phrase.

The media has proven itself to be slanted, inflammatory, and skirting on the edge of libel.

At BEST, it is completely untrustworthy, to the point that even an honest and correct article can’t be trusted without vetting it 10 ways yourself... which most people aren’t willing, and in some cases, unable to do.

I don’t give a pass to the Media being any more honest or reliable than social media, which isn’t honest or reliable either, even if individual contributors might happen to be.

I don’t give Musk a pass, either. He has shown himself to be self-aggrandizing, foolish, inflamatory, accusatory, and slanderous (pedo-guy? really?)

I generally don’t trust what he says, either. but even a broken clock is right twice a day... he just happens to be upset about what most people already know...

And the broken media clock may be right about him, and Tesla, as well... with criticism of autonomous driving, and production issues, which neither are new topics.

... but someone who has been burned by the media, and is themselves prone to outbursts and over-reactions, is not generally going to respond objectively, either.

Objectivity left the building some time ago.

Media, social media, culture, government, and business have all departed from honesty, integrity, and trustworthiness, and are losing, or have entirely lost the respect that people have for them.

When trust is lost, and respect goes with it, problems happen. At an institutional level... BIG institutional problems happen.

“It’s really incredibly irresponsible of any journalists with integrity to write an article that would lead people to believe that autonomy is less safe. Because people might actually turn it off, and then die,” he said.
